इधर उधर की बात 82 (चिकन और क्रिकेट) -ब्रिगेडियर पी.एस. गोथरा (से.नि.)
"तुम कितने भोले हो जो महाकुंभ को राष्ट्र की शक्ति से जोड़ रहे हो। क्या तुम्हें याद नहीं, जब हमारे सैनिक कारगिल में शहीद हो रहे थे, तब देश क्रिकेट खेल रहा था?" फोन पर मेरे एक मित्र की आवाज़ गूंज उठी। उन्होंने मेरा पॉडकास्ट देखा था, जहाँ मैंने महाकुंभ में भारत की जनभागीदारी को 'उत्साह शक्ति'—इस देश के जज़्बे का प्रतीक बताया था।
मेरे पास तुरंत कोई जवाब नहीं था, तो मैंने बातचीत बदल दी।
लेकिन बीती रात, भारत ने चैंपियंस ट्रॉफी जीत ली। पूरा देश झूम उठा। आसमान में आतिशबाज़ी छा गई। सड़कों पर लोग नाचने लगे। और कहीं, नियंत्रण रेखा के पास एक चौकी में, एक ट्रांजिस्टर पर कमेंट्री गूंज रही थी। सैनिक झुंड बनाकर बैठे थे, हर गेंद, हर रन सुन रहे थे, हर चौके-छक्के पर ऐसे जश्न मना रहे थे जैसे कोई युद्ध जीत लिया हो। यहाँ तक कि हमारे पड़ोसियों ने भी ‘इंडिया! इंडिया!’ के नारे सुने होंगे।
और उसी क्षण मैंने सोचा—क्रिकेट भी भारत की शक्ति का एक आयाम है। कभी-कभी यह वहाँ हौसला बढ़ाता है जहाँ और कुछ नहीं कर सकता। 1995 की बात है। "साहब,
चार जवान शहीद और छह अस्पताल में," जैसे ही मैं 5 दिसंबर को श्रीनगर एयरफील्ड पर उतरा, मेरे कंपनी हवलदार मेजर ने रिपोर्ट दी। मैं कुछ दिनों की छुट्टी के बाद लौटा था, और यह खबर सीधे दिल पर लगी। मेरी सी कंपनी ने 4 दिसंबर को अल फरान आतंकवादियों के साथ मुठभेड़ की थी। हमने पाँच आतंकवादियों को ढेर कर दिया था, जिनमें उनका सरगना हामिद तुर्की भी था—वही जिसने उस साल विदेशी पर्यटकों का अपहरण और हत्या की थी।
ऊपर के अधिकारी खुश थे। मिशन सफल रहा था। लेकिन ज़मीन पर, असली दुनिया में, हम अपने शहीद साथियों के पार्थिव शरीर और उनकी निशानियों को घर भेज रहे थे। कंपनी का मनोबल टूट रहा था।
मैंने सोचा, अब क्या किया जाए? हम फिर से अपने कठोर रूटीन पर लौट आए—गश्त, एंबुश, और आतंकियों पर दबाव बनाए रखना। लेकिन कुछ तो ग़लत था। जवानों के चेहरे बुझ चुके थे, उनकी चाल भारी थी, आँखों में एक खालीपन झलक रहा था। सिर्फ़ लड़ाई लड़ना इस बार काफ़ी नहीं था।
तभी, सीनियर जेसीओ ने एक अनोखा सुझाव दिया—चिकन और क्रिकेट।
जी हाँ, बिल्कुल सही सुना आपने। अगले दो दिनों तक हमने अपने राइफलें एक ओर रख दीं और चाकू, बैट और बॉल उठा लिए—न लड़ने के लिए, बल्कि खाना बनाने और क्रिकेट खेलने के लिए।
बडी-लेवल कुकिंग—बिलकुल ज़ीरो से शुरू। मुर्गे साफ़ किए, मसाले लगाए, ठंड में अस्थायी चूल्हों पर पकाए। और फिर आया क्रिकेट—कोई गेंद को पकड़ने में गड़बड़ कर रहा था, कोई ज़बरदस्त छक्का मार रहा था। हंसी वापस लौट आई। भाईचारा फिर से जीवंत हो गया।
थोड़ा अतिरिक्त कंपनी फंड खर्च करके कुछ मुर्गे खरीदे गए, लेकिन हमने जो पाया, वह इससे कहीं ज़्यादा क़ीमती था—हमने अपने जवानों की आत्मा वापस पा ली।
अब, कुछ लोग सवाल उठा सकते हैं— "कैसे कोई चिकन खा सकता है जब उसके साथी शहीद हुए हों?"
लेकिन जो युद्ध देख चुके हैं, वे जानते हैं—आप शोक में खुद को खो नहीं सकते। आप लड़ते हैं, आप जीते हैं, और अपने शहीदों का सम्मान करते हुए आगे बढ़ते हैं।
मुझे चिकन हमेशा से पसंद था। लेकिन उस दिन, मुझे क्रिकेट से प्यार हो गया।
कल की जीत के लिए, मेरे सलाम उन लड़कों को जो हमेशा हमें एकजुट करते हैं और भारत की आत्मा को ऊँचा उठाते हैं।
जब भारत वर्ल्ड कप जीतता है, तो यह सिर्फ़ एक ट्रॉफी उठाने वाली टीम नहीं होती—यह एक अरब सपनों की पूर्ति होती है।
यह सिर्फ़ क्रिकेट से बड़ा है। यह हमारी पहचान, एकता, और जज़्बे की बात है। यह उस राष्ट्र की कहानी है जो कभी झुकता नहीं—चाहे वह युद्ध का मैदान हो या क्रिकेट का मैदान। मैंने अपनी आँखों से देखा है कि कैसे किसी बर्फ़ीली पोस्ट पर रेडियो से आता एक स्कोर जवानों के चेहरे पर नई ऊर्जा भर देता है।
तो, जो लोग सोचते हैं कि क्रिकेट और युद्ध का कोई आपसी संबंध नहीं, मैं कहता हूँ—दोनों ही लड़ाइयाँ हैं। दोनों में बलिदान चाहिए। और दोनों में एक राष्ट्र को जोड़ने की ताकत होती है।

It is true that cricket in India has been a popular sport even during pre TV era when you enjoyed the adrenalin rush with every ball even without witnessing the game - it has the potential to lay the streets silent just like the times when airing of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan used to create a deserted look on the streets across the nation - the moot point is while the victory is celebrated with lot of fanfare, a defeat plummets the moral of the entire audience - here is where there is that subtle distinction between cricketers & soldiers- the latter irrespective of the result has to keep going - rather an adverse situation tends to bring out the best in a soldier - another point to ponder would be that while a soldier enjoys cricket & commentary with equal steadfastness do the cricketers also enjoy the action & tales of soldiers with the same zest !!!!

ReplyDeleteBeing a keen sportsman and cricket enthusiast,carried my Hitachi mini transister to follow the world cup finals between West Indies and our team.
While in the last post after sundown,heard of our glorious victory.A big jubilant cry rang up in the post,we celebrated our victory with an Impromptu Bara Khana.
My CO was panicking at my delay in returning to the Unit HQ at the base.He was reassured by the good news and a vehicle was sent to bring me back from the foothill.
Am forever thankful to my late father for giving me the handy transistor which greatly entertained me with BBC news and All India radio programmes.
