IDHAR UDHAR KI BAAT 80 (The Maha Kumbh and CNP) Brig PS Gothra (Retd)
"It is a waste of resources to hold the Kumbh Mela on such a massive
scale," the man said when I mentioned that I hadn’t taken a dip at the Maha
Kumbh. He had told me earlier that he was an atheist.
I smiled. "With your outlook, you will always see the negatives in
religion. But from my military perspective, I see the Kumbh as a
powerful demonstration to both our enemies and our allies."
He raised an eyebrow. "Military? What does religion have to do with the military?"
"Everything," I replied. "Think about it. Crores of people
gather, travel, and take a dip in unison. What does that signify?
(a) The ability to mobilize millions at an unprecedented scale.
(b) The administrative strength of the nation to manage such an event efficiently.
(c) The unshakable faith of our people, willing to endure discomfort for a larger cause.
(d) The great capability of our leadership.
"Isn’t it something to be proud of that this event is visible from space? I assure you, our enemies are watching."
He shrugged. "Fine, but what’s 'military' about it?"
I leaned forward. "Imagine the impact if the entire nation mobilized
to support a war. Imagine if such a mass movement was directed towards
liberating POK or Tibet. Imagine if people voluntarily contributed their
wealth to fund a national cause. Events like the Kumbh Mela make it
clear—India’s national power isn’t just about weapons; it’s about the
will of its people. And any serious military strategist in the world
would take note of that."
His expression
hardened. "But people have died in stampede at this gathering, and here
you are, calling it an asset to national power. Isn’t that absurd?"
I sighed. "Look at the bigger picture. More people visited after that
incident, and the administration only improved its arrangements. That
showcases the grit of both our people and our government. Now, compare
this to China. If a stampede of this scale had occurred there, they
would have either shut down the event completely or controlled the
crowds with brutal force—just as they did during COVID. Did you see
those videos of people being shot by their forces. India, in contrast,
adapts and strengthens."
He scoffed. "So, according to you, it’s time to rejoice?"
"Yes, it’s time to rejoice. But it’s also time to contemplate."
His curiosity piqued. "Contemplate? About what?"
I leaned in. "Any adversary worth its salt will attempt to neutralize
this element of our national power. And if we don’t prepare, they will
succeed."
"Neutralize? How?"
I exhaled. "The key forces behind the Kumbh’s success are faith
(aastha) and leadership. Our enemies will attempt to manipulate public
perception to divide that faith or install incompetent leaders to
mismanage such events. Have you not seen how there were indications of
U.S. having allocated funds to influence Indian elections? Similar
efforts will be made by others to weaken what makes us strong."
He smirked. "I see an andhbhakt in you."
I shook my head. The man has started displaying his ad hominem
tendency. I was getting irritated as he was blinded by negativity and
yet called me an andhbakht. But I said, "I’m sorry, you can’t
recognize a pragmatic deshbhakt in me."
And with that, I walked away as I didn’t want to challenge his perspective any further. The Gurbani says:-
Ham Nahee Changae Buraa Nahee Koe. Pranavath Naanak Thaarae Soe.
I am not good; no one is bad. Prays Nanak, He (God) alone saves us!
Note:-
I feel sorry for Klause E Knorr, Clifford German, Wilhelm Fucks,
Michael Eugene Porter, Ray Cline as they will have to add another factor
in their equations to calculate Comprehensive National Power (CNP) to cater
for aastha of Indians

DeleteSunita Ranyal
DeleteA new perspective put in words beautifully sir. Indianness explained at its best , & yes strategies may need to give an eye to details of MAHAKUMBH success.
DeleteVery true sir. You have given a totally new perspective!
ReplyDeleteUnique demonstration of National Power sir..very well brought out in the brief conversation ๐
ReplyDeleteJai Hind !
DeleteVery well written as always, a very different orientation of patriotism and pragmatism mingled with Aastha!! Cheers
ReplyDeleteBrilliant.
ReplyDeleteNamaskaram. ๐๐
DeleteIt is really reflecting the faith of Bharath Nation, by an average nearly one percent of our population participating every day from the start to end. Hara Hara MahaDeva !!
DeleteThe above replies are from the heart of C R Sankaran, Tamilnadu, Dakshina Bharath.
DeleteSir,
ReplyDeleteIn addition to having the ability to look at events with an entirely unique perspective, you have the endearing ability to support your views with very convincing narratives.
I hope our leaders can tap upon this latent strength of the nation to propel it to prosperity and greatness.
Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic narration of a side, of this massive show of belief & unity, that many would not think of. It certainly gives food for thought to many aspiring to undermine our National integrity. Enjoyed every bit of it. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteIt is the largest gathering on planet earth. Also, exceptionally good leaders and India is in good hands. Very positive outlook and brilliant article from your pen.
ReplyDeleteThis a a Fabulous Articulation Sir - The Largest Human Gathering on Universe is going to go down in History - Sir you have beautifully brought out the strategic factors too of the gathering idolised by Faith and Leadership- This event is indeed a great lesson for all of us. Amazing sir
ReplyDeleteVery well analysed sir.
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautifully written piece that seamlessly weaves history, spirituality, and present-day significance. Your insights make Maha Kumbh even more fascinating. Eagerly awaiting more!
ReplyDeleteAmazing article reflecting organization of maha-kumbh as a display of national strength. Indeed, the logistics of a nation in which an event that is to be attended by over 400 million and things go more smoothly than 400 million people simply living is commendable. For anyone who points out that so many people have died in maha-kumbh, a simple question must be asked. It is a morbid question, but a logical one - how many of those 400 million people would die if they never came to maha-kumbh based on the national statistics of India? In a nation, many people are born every day, and many people die every day. India's death rate is about 7/1000 per year(pre-covid era). India's birth rate is 16/1000 per year. This means that every single day, about 8000 people would die in a single day per 400 million, and about 17000 people are born in a single day. So, when people start quoting some death numbers, it has to be seen in the context of very large numbers.
ReplyDeleteFantastic read dear. Great as always
ReplyDeleteReligion and faith gives you power to overcome adversity. Aptly highlighted. Proud of our great Nation and our Defence Forces.
ReplyDeleteSir, absolutely brilliant article.. What a narration. ๐๐๐
ReplyDeleteAmazingly put sir... After reading this, I read chitthi and veterans... You have a gift sir...
ReplyDeleteThe intrinsic strength of faith is an intangible factor of CNP .
ReplyDeleteWell articulated.
What a naive analysis/ comparison.
ReplyDeleteAmazing perspective. Har Har Mahadev ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑ
ReplyDeleteSimply Superb! Your take on this mega event reflects a very profound military stategem. Kudos
ReplyDeleteShifting view changes the way we had been looking at , brilliant Sir
ReplyDeleteCommitment and faith are often shaken during times of crisis, there is no notable change in attitude and piety post religious gathering. Similar gathering across various faiths albeit in a smaller scale occur annually, yet human behaviour in times of crisis remains unpredictable.
ReplyDeletePlease share your email at 9820001918 on WhatsApp. Jai Hind! ๐ฎ๐ณ
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! A totally fresh perspective which is an eye-opener. This is as spectacular a demonstration of CNP as it could be. The faith, the org muscle, the bandwidth to absorb nuances and the ability to bounce back are all hallmarks of a national resolve and innate strength. However, I may throw in a caveat- the sea of humanity moving for Mahakumbh had individual motivation piwered by 'Aastha' and not a collective will. In times of national crisis, this resolve is yet to be tested, specially from a military perspective. Notwithstanding, once again a gem from your powerful pen. Hats off
ReplyDeleteWonderful. For me it was a dip of faith and love. Battled through the worst traffic jams of our lives. Will never forget the bike ride with three pieces of luggage , Wife and I on a bike trying to navigate through kms of traffic. Perhaps, the discipline of Army, resilience and the ability not to let go helped us complete this pilgrimage.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic article.....total different perspective......never saw it from the way you have put it across....amazing
ReplyDeleteAmazing ......never saw it from the perspective of how it has been brought out.....wonderful read
ReplyDeleteWell writen, presenting a totally different prospective.
ReplyDeletePrecise analysis from an entirely different perspective!
ReplyDeleteIt goes way beyond senseless debates about being either an 'Andhbhakt' or being a 'Ghulam'!
Very truly you have put forward a Soldier's perspective like a true professional writer, proving once again that whether it's Gun or Pen, a Soldiers knows how to be blunt and humble at the same time. "Kumbh main dubki to nahi lagai Sir, par aasth aur deshbhakti ke sangam ko dekh kar garv jaroor mahsoos kar rahe hain. You have magic in your Idhar Udhar ki stitching".Kudos
ReplyDeleteVery rightly brought out. One has to see the positives of each aspect rather than blindly go for negatives. Secondly aastha of each religion should be respected as we do in Armed forces.
ReplyDeleteWell written ๐๐
Good read Sir
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful composition. Kudos, Sir
ReplyDeleteSuperb writing Sir. Also, just read your Lal Chithi Asaram Di.
ReplyDeleteCaptivating style of writing. Never knew this aspect of yours when we were together in Lucknow - you in 4 and later 2/5 and I in 41. K K Sharma
Great thoughts, our common folk have been our strength, over the millenia...
ReplyDeleteI agree dear Brig. Are u my LDMC25 COURSE MATE.Carter
ReplyDeleteNo sir, I did HC 38
ReplyDeleteWhat an article๐ซก❤️
ReplyDeleteMay the people understand it without bias. The shortest name today for anything positive is andhabhakt. The greater picture is missed out by sher attitude of negating.
The mahakumbh has aptly brought out the real strength as brought out by the author.
Serious introspection is needed on all points suggested. The energy, will and faith of the nation will decide the future of the nation and our future generations.
I strongly recommend this blog to go viral as it provides the food for thought for the entire spectrum of the nation.
Superb is the analysis as least that I can say.
Let the grey cells feel the elixir of higher thinking......
Well explained.
ReplyDeleteIt's true that faith & religion united the country.Same is applicable to all other countries too. What is more important is the national will and a strong leadership & above all, no political interference in the military matters.
Not too sure if you are correct on this count. Pakistan was created on the basis of religion and yet couldn't remain intact even for 25 years with East Pakistan breaking away. Pakistan is likely to break again within the next 5 years! So there is much more to it than what you say.
DeleteRegards.
Sir, your article reinforces & very aptly explains what "Iqbal" wrote several decades ago
ReplyDeleteThe faith & resilience of our people is un comparable.
Sir, you have remarkably conceptualised the essence of Mahakumbh from a different perspective…a must read by all..
ReplyDeleteTruthful narration of our people strength.
ReplyDeleteIt was demonstrated & seen by Britishers during our freedom movement pre-15 August 1947.
Ganesh utsav in Maharashtra gathered people from religion to freedom movement.
The world should know if the entire nation can beat Thali & Tali, lit their mobile flash, when needed will join together for Nation๐ฎ๐ณ.
Jaihind.
Amazing perspective, hope the strategist at national level aware of such dormant power.
ReplyDeleteI like it. Narration and expression bring out essence of Astha aptly
ReplyDeleteSir, An amazing prospective described in a manner of simple affection with the Religion . exceptional work showcasing exceptional grit and integrity amongst citizens
ReplyDeleteWell said
ReplyDeleteVery true. Very well described and this ( Aastha) is definitely an additional and invaluable element of our National Power. I remember when we were mobilised during Op Vijay people were standing on the road side with stalls of food and water and they were throwing biscuit packets towards our moving convoy for our soldiers to catch. ๐ซก
ReplyDeleteJust brilliant way we demonstrate our team work for big cause....
DeleteExcellent explanation....
ReplyDeleteVery well covered
ReplyDeleteExcellent narration of faith and human power resources. Excellent perspective well written sir
ReplyDeleteYou have the power of explaining profound things in a simple manner: great!
ReplyDeleteContinue with the good work,. spreading sincere positivity to kill the negativity amongst many!
God bless.
With all due respect
ReplyDelete1. Ritual is one element of religion, which in turn is just one part of spirituality. There can be people who who are spiritual but not religious and religious but not ritualistic. How can we say that those who see ritual as not necessary are not religious or spiritual?
2. Does the common faith of devotees going for the Mahakumbh make them suitable to be molded into an army? Is just faith sufficient for anyone to become an armed forces member? Would the fact that this large gathering of devotees with a common belief really worry our enemy? Can we recover POK or Aksai Chin, because the size of the devotee population is large?
3. Are the arrangements for Kumbh a completely new phenomenon? Our population and the attendance at the Kumbh celebrations has been increasing and successive administrations have learnt and always stepped up
4. As to foreign interference, Mr Trump has cited that the 21M USD was given to our honorable PM. Do we take on board every such allegation?
An honest perspective, straight from a soldier's heart.... No ifs, no buts.....
ReplyDeleteLet the readers assimilate and appreciate the very essence of this beautiful article.
More power to your pen for such beautiful writings...
Well written Brig. Was there on 13 Feb and found the event well managed
ReplyDeleteVery nicely brought out the planning and management of such an event where almost 67 crore devotees enjoyed irrespective of the hardships faced by them to reach Prayagraj.

ReplyDeleteWell said Sir. Truly inspiring. Time people realize the strength of our great nation. Mahakumbh in its entirety was a true reflection.
ReplyDeleteAmazing as always PSG!
ReplyDeleteVery well articulated!!! ๐ฏ
Wonderful perspective. Totally unthought of! But that exactly is what makes your jottings so immersive.
ReplyDeleteYour take on the MahaKumbh is so apt and complete. I am absolutely spellbound by the brilliant quote from the Gurbani that you have used to end a discussion that has no logical end. A lot to learn. My take on the same event, on Feb 25, follows.
ReplyDeleteAs a DS in DSSC, I was always amazed at the planning, logistics, and the launch of the strike corps comprising of about 1L humans and assorted weapons, vehicles, communication systems, etc. The whole cycle, if I remember right, for the move from peace to employment in battle was meticulously planned by professionals and took about six months.
Looking at the Maha Kumbh, this temporary mini city, where 64 crore people have already been, I can only bow my head to those who planned to the minutest details, and implemented the plans with minimal breakdowns.
Lastly, it is a great tribute to this civilisation and it's offsprings that people of all economic, social, regional hues could voluntarily come and peacefully take the holy dip, with no ill feelings or negativity towards anything or anyone. We witnessed the richest/poorest/naga sadhus/people of all castes & creeds moving, living, eating in the limited space of the Sangam area with no major issues. "Mera Bharat Mahan" and "Incredible India are no longer just slogans in my mind; they encapsulate the spirit & beauty of this civilisation. This becomes even more stark and clear while looking at Pakistan and Bangladesh, our partitioned limbs, which tried to forge a new basis of nationhood, based on just religion. Our civilisational ethos of Vasudaiva Kutumbakkam is worthy of emulation by all right thinking humans.
Mahakumbh has been a mammoth display of our beliefs or Aastha & administrative acumen in man management over a period of 45 days - Aastha as a tool for comprehensive national power is an interesting perspective - its linkage to Indian military is deep rooted since its inception as evident from various war cries of the Indian Army - these have been the rallying points for many a battles and the victories thereupon - on the lighter side we can think of having our next mobilisation Warning Order as Mahakumbh ensuring mass & whole hearted participation of entire nation !!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is the age of awakening for the Hindus . Thanks to internet we realised that there has been a systematic erosion of our religion deliberately by conversion and Islam by force. We have a rich past and time has come to defend ourselves with force if needbe then accept Govt to help us.
ReplyDeleteAs ever, the unique context you have emplaced the event in, elicits a wonderful smile. The gloomy market situation notwithstanding. Wah! What an idea Sirjee !!!
ReplyDeleteThat’s an interesting perspective Brig Gothra Sir, and I see where you are coming from ... the scale, the coord, the sheer will of the people. But let’s take a step back and ask .... does this really translate to mil power?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, "Let’s not mistake a mass gathering for military capability."
Sure, the Kumbh Mela is an impressive logistical feat ... it shows India's might in managing large crowds, coordinate resources, and ensure order. But war isn’t about moving unarmed civilians in a peaceful environment. It’s about trained, disciplined, and strategically deployed forces operating in high-stress, hostile conditions.
If sheer numbers and enthusiasm won wars, China would have taken Taiwan by now, and Russia would have walked over Ukraine in a few weeks. The reality? Wars are fought with preparation, technology, strategy, and sustained national effort... not just faith and mass mobilization.
Take 1971, India didn’t win because we had a lot of people. We won because we had superior strategy, battle-hardened troops, airtight diplomacy, and leadership that planned every move. Or look at Kargil, our forces didn’t just "show up in numbers"; they fought under brutal conditions with superior tactics and raw courage.
Now, if the Kumbh-scale enthusiasm could be channeled into defense R&D, border infrastructure, and a strategic national security mindset, then we’d be talking about real military capability. Until then, let’s appreciate the Kumbh for what it is, a cultural and administrative success, but let’s not kid ourselves into thinking it’s a projection of military strength. That’s an entirely different game.
again, its a perspective!
Cheers!
Gist of entire 70 comment above said it all ; *JUST SUPERB*
ReplyDeleteIt’s a pity that the event of a life time also witnessed a stampede and devotees being killed.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, even when you take your car out to go to office there is a risk to life and any mass congregation too would have that. In fact till 25th Feb the death count of people killed in road accidents coming to / going back from kumbh was 281. Hence, while it’s terrible that a rogue incident took place during such an otherwise flawless event, the opponents must weigh the national pride associated with the event vs the gains to politicise the tragedy.
Very well narrated. In simple words sums up the occasion and administration in unique manner. Keep it up
ReplyDeleteA nice insight into the prespective of how the nation's people power can be motivated to support our military efforts to defeat our adversaries.A good analysis brother.
ReplyDeleteWithout provoking any one we could demonstrate the latent heat, energy and solidarity to all our enemies internal or external.
ReplyDeleteWorld has experienced a new strength of Hindus and this will be a subject for research.
How beautiful it is just to imagine the glory of Hindus.
A good thought, needs some serious deliberations to exploit this strength to further our CNP
ReplyDeleteBeautifully expressed. The thoughts of Baba Gurunanak are universal.
ReplyDeleteTipu excellent is the word for this story elucidated in conversation. Managing civilians at that magnitude with near perfection calls for a big applause to the efforts of Yogi and his team. Such meaningful articles must find space in media.I have send this to few media friends to enlighten our countrymen in their own style. Good Tipu keep it up.
ReplyDeleteSo well said. What is good is good. People have pre conceived perceptions. Good narration
ReplyDeleteVery well written sir
ReplyDeleteI too publish some content on Spirituality and Armed forces, Just like Arjuna won biggest war just by surrendering unto lord
Wow Tiger. What a analogy. The military assesment of the event is indeep very relevant and our adversaries need to sit up and contemplate. The might our National will and resultant National power as covered is indeed very dicernable for the magnitude and indulgence of the people power san the political overtures. THANKS AND KEEP SPEARHEADING military power of the nNations.๐๐
ReplyDeleteWe recently visited Mahakubh. I totally agree with the perspective highlighted by you. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAmazing as always, the power of the pen is mightier than the sword
ReplyDeleteGreat feel. Atmans that's the Soul's of 67 crore Indians+like-minded admirers world over, look Bharat as the promising ray of hope for world peace. The G-20 theme of vasudhaiva kutumbkam: one world - one family stood firmly for all big and small nations, that the Vishwa Guru seems to have been motivated by the Paramatma for welfare of humanity through examplary success of Kumbha2025.

ReplyDeleteInternal Danger influenced by External Inimical Powers, Looms More to Our country. Perfectly said - Our enemies will attempt to manipulate public perception to divide that faith or install incompetent leaders to mismanage such events. Beautiful Write as Usual.
ReplyDeleteWhat an insightful blog on the successful Mahakumbh is both captivating and enlightening! His detailed account not only highlights the logistical marvel of organizing such a massive event but also celebrates the spiritual essence and cultural significance of the Mahakumbh. A truly inspiring read that showcases India's rich traditions and the dedication of those who make such extraordinary gatherings possible."
ReplyDeleteAwesome work
ReplyDeleteThis article wonderfully highlights the greatness of the Maha Kumbh, showing how it brings millions of people together in faith and devotion. It also praises the incredible planning and management that make such a huge event run smoothly. The way it acknowledges the strong leadership behind it is truly commendable. And the fact that this event is visible from space? That’s something to be truly proud of—one that even our enemies cannot ignore.
ReplyDeleteWow!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is truly a like-minded blog—only an Army personnel can think this way. Kumbh Mela isn’t just a religious event; it’s a testament to India’s unity, resilience, and organizational strength. The ability to mobilize millions voluntarily is a strategic asset that any serious analyst must acknowledge. And yes, those calculating Comprehensive National Power (CNP) must now account for aastha as a force multiplier!
We can only salute and say, "Jai Hind!"
An interesting view point. Keep up the good work- Mona

Deletereat story and important commentary on optimism vs pessimism. Especially liked the part on the strength of will power from the masses. Keep up the great writing!!!
ReplyDeleteSo well explained, absolutely right the power of deshbhakti is over and above all other kinds of power. Moreover, I appreciate the arrangements by the Government for handling such a big crowd each day for holy bath at Triveni
ReplyDeleteNice post that effectively highlights the crucial distinction between logistical prowess in a civilian context and actual military capability. The point about channeling 'Kumbh-scale enthusiasm' into tangible defense assets is particularly strong. It's a reminder that national strength isn't just about demonstrating scale, but about strategically investing in the factors that truly determine military effectiveness. After seeing the counter arguments in the article it is indeed surprising that our country is also plagued with many who see only the negatives and evaluate genuine national pride as andhbhakti.
ReplyDeleteThe Mahakumbh is not just a spiritual confluence but a testament to India's organizational strength, cultural richness, and national unity. This blog beautifully captures how the event reflects Comprehensive National Power, showcasing the seamless coordination of governance, security, and devotion on an unparalleled scale. A truly enlightening read that deepens appreciation for India's heritage and resilience!
ReplyDeleteThat is what is called Command Over the Language. A very routine and seemingly routine event, but you could hold attention of the reader, till one finishes the pages. Kudos
ReplyDeleteAn outstanding narration and views of a brother fauzi. I visited along with Commodore Naresh Kumar and we had similar experience with an 65 yr old widow. We fauzi's are different. Regards - Capt.(IN) Vicky Bhardwaj
